5 Areas to Stock Up (and the 4 Items to Start With)

Start Here| Stock Up

Welcome to the very first post on our blog! So many of us have asked: where to begin when it comes to keeping a well-stocked home?! Whether you're thinking about storms, rising prices, or just want fewer last-minute runs to the store, a little planning goes a long way. Gathered it all into five simple areas.

1. Food Storage

Start with shelf-stable staples your family already eat and enjoy: rice, beans, pasta, oats, canned goods, and flour. Clear airtight jars keep things fresh and let you see at a glance what's running low. Be sure to label everything with a date and what's inside.

2. Seeds & Supplies

Seed storage can be quick and easy once you get the gist! Using kraft paper 2x6 envelopes, with a label and season harvest is the easiest way I've found to stay organized.

3. Books

Some things are easier to look up than to remember, especially when you need them most. Start with your Bible, and keep a few different translations on hand for deeper study. Add books on basic chemistry, local typography maps from 10/25/100 years old and herbal remedies for practical know-how, plus some good leisure reading for quiet evenings. It may seem simple, but a well-stocked bookshelf is one of those things you don’t think about until the day you need it.

4. Cleaning Supplies

A clean home is a healthy home. Stock up on multi-purpose cleaner, aprons, cleaning gloves and different bottles to mix the cleaning concentrate.

5. First Aid Supplies

Step up from a basic first aid kit to a medical-grade CLS kit. Include hemostatic gauze, silver nitrate applicators, PPE, and biohazard bags for safe disposal. And don’t forget adult diapers.

One trip, four items, and you're on your way.

  • 5 lb Flour: the foundation for bread, biscuits, and pancakes.
  • 20 lb Rice: affordable, filling, and keeps well sealed in a cool, dry spot.
  • 3 Gal Glass Water: plan on about one gallon of water per person, per day.
  • 1 Gal OdoBan Concentrate: a little goes a long way, since it's diluted before use. Check the label for mixing.
